A little orientation

Welcome to Out & Back

A conversation game for connecting with others—and with yourself. Follow a trail of questions from light warm-ups to deeper reflection, then come back with a little more understanding.

No score. No right answers. No need to reach the summit.

01 · Find your footing

Your first conversation, in three steps

  1. 1. Choose your company

Pick a group that fits: couples, family, friends, or solo reflection. Then choose a trail—a topic for your conversation.

  2. 2. Choose your depth

Select one or more levels before you begin. Stay with lighter questions, explore deeper ones, or include all four.

  3. 3. Start the hike

Read a question aloud and take turns answering, or reflect on it on your own. Choose Next when you're ready to move on.

02 · Set your pace

Four levels. Your kind of climb.

The trail names describe the depth of the questions, not your progress or ability. You don't have to complete one level to choose another.

Level 1

Trailhead

Ease in with lighter questions. A good place to start when you're getting comfortable with each other.

Level 2

Ascent

Move beyond the everyday and explore experiences, perspectives, and what matters to you.

Level 3

Ridgeline

Make room for more challenging reflection and deeper conversations. Take your time here.

Level 4

Summit

Explore the most introspective and vulnerable questions, only when it feels right for everyone.

03 · Make space to connect

The conversation matters more than finishing.

A few agreements before you begin

  • Anyone can pass on a question, without explaining why. Just choose Next.
  • Listen with curiosity. Give each person room to finish before responding.
  • Share only what feels comfortable, and agree to respect each other's privacy.
  • Pause, stop, or return to lighter levels whenever you need. There's no time limit.

Make the trail your own

Next moves forward; Back revisits a question. Change levels takes you back to your level choices. You can end a conversation at any time.
